Moving to Reno from Idaho

Idaho is one of the shorter long-distance moves into Reno, a drive of roughly seven and a half hours from Boise. That puts it in a middle zone: the shipment is priced by weight like any interstate move, but you can easily make an in-person trip to look at homes. Here is what Idaho and Nevada each require, and what the numbers say.

Idaho's 30-day rules

The Idaho Transportation Department requires you to title and register a vehicle within 30 days of moving to Idaho and to apply for an Idaho license within 30 days of residing there; it defines residency as 90 continuous days of domicile. These are arrival rules. If you are leaving Idaho, ask the county assessor or DMV office how to handle a vehicle with a lien, and keep your Idaho registration valid until Nevada issues its own.

Some Idaho resort cities levy local-option taxes, so your last Idaho receipts may carry more than the state rate. A tax professional can confirm any final Idaho filing.

A flat 5.3 percent against none

Idaho taxes income at a flat 5.3 percent according to the Idaho State Tax Commission's 2025 schedule, and its state sales tax is 6 percent. Nevada has no state personal income tax. The Census median household income for Idaho is 77,800 dollars; at that level the difference in state tax can be meaningful for a household, but check your own situation with a tax professional.

A flow that runs both ways

The Census counted about 2,150 movers from Idaho to Nevada in 2024 and about 3,270 from Nevada to Idaho, so more went toward Idaho than came from it.
