Data (read 2026-10-19): OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, free-flow drive from 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks; U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates; NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020; U.S. Census Bureau, State-to-State Migration Flows (ACS 1-year 2024); U.S. Census Bureau, ACS county-to-county migration flows 2016-2020.

Census counts put the flow from Pierce County to Washoe County at about 157 people a year (2016-2020), against about 39 moving the other way, so the traffic runs strongly toward Reno. Washington as a whole sent about 4,887 people to Nevada in 2024.

The drive: I-5, OR 58, US 97, CA 139 and US 395

Tacoma starts about 33 miles closer to Reno than Seattle does, and the route is the same after the Willamette Valley. The truck takes I-5 for about 251 miles, then OR 58 for about 85 miles over the Cascades, US 97 for about 82 miles, and CA 139 for about 98 miles through Modoc County. US 395 carries the last leg into the Reno area. The total is about 672 miles.

The first third of the trip is a freeway day, with ports, warehouses and heavy traffic around the Puget Sound and Portland corridors. After that the route turns to two-lane highway. WSDOT is the source for the Tacoma end, Oregon TripCheck for OR 58 and US 97, and Caltrans QuickMap for CA 139 and US 395.

Two days at 500 miles a day means an overnight stop, and loading, weight stops and Sparks scheduling all fall within the trip. Your written estimate sets the delivery window, not the map.

The route reaches Reno from the north on US 395, so the Sierra summits and their chain controls are not part of the trip.

Tacoma and Reno side by side

Tacoma averages about 42.0 inches of precipitation a year, against about 7.4 at the Reno airport. The January average high is 46.3 F in Tacoma and 47.7 F in Reno, and July highs are 75.5 F and 93.9 F. Reno summers are much hotter, and the nights cool off fast.

The table above uses Census figures for the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area, so it is a regional comparison: a median gross rent of $2,000 and a median home value of $717,500 against Reno-Sparks at a median gross rent of $1,592 and a median home value of $502,300. The city of Tacoma itself has a median gross rent of $1,676 and a median home value of $479,600.

How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent

O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks.
