Washington gives new residents 30 days to get a driver license and register a vehicle, collects no income tax on wages, and charges a 6.5 percent state sales tax plus a local part. O'Brien's books your move from Sparks and the Bekins network carries it to Washington.
Washington looks most like Nevada on payday, since neither taxes wages, but it differs on capital gains and on a new high-income tax. The Department of Licensing and Department of Revenue set the details.

One 30-day window for both
The Washington Department of Licensing says you have 30 days after moving to Washington to get your driver license and register your vehicle. It is the same 30 days for both tasks, so one visit to a licensing office, with Nevada license, title, registration and proof of address, can cover everything.
Check the Department of Licensing site for the office nearest your new address before you drive in. Bring your Nevada license, because the office takes it back when the Washington license is issued.
Taxes beyond wages
Washington does not currently have an individual income tax on wages. The state does charge a separate excise tax on certain long-term capital gains, and in 2026 legislation created a tax on adjusted gross income over $1 million, so anyone selling a Nevada business or large investments should read the Department of Revenue's income tax page.
The state sales tax is 6.5 percent with a local part added, and the Revenue page explains the combined rate by location. Nevada's statewide minimum is 6.85 percent.
Booking the move north
You book with O'Brien's. An estimator inventories your belongings at home, writes an itemized written estimate, and the Bekins network carries the shipment to Washington. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. The Pacific Northwest routes page covers the roads and mountain passes. Wood furniture and paper goods deserve good wrapping for any long trip; see full packing.

Storage and boxes
If your Washington home is not ready when your Nevada sale closes, wooden vault storage in Sparks begins at $40 per month and ships with about 2 to 3 weeks notice. The in-home estimate comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes. Book from the free estimate page.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

3 O'Brien movers came down from Reno to South Lake Tahoe to assist our company moving a lot of big furniture out of a large warehouse. They showed up on-time, were friendly, and were professional and got the job done quickly and diligently. Will definitely use them again.
