Seattle to Reno is about 705 road miles, a 14 h 42 min free-flow drive, which is two days at 500 miles a day. O'Brien's books it as a Bekins Van Lines agent (U.S. DOT No. 30611) and delivers in Reno from the Sparks warehouse.
Census counts put the flow from Snohomish, King and Pierce counties to Washoe County at about 318 people a year (2016-2020), with about 272 a year moving the other way. Washington as a whole sent about 4,887 people to Nevada in 2024. Neither state taxes wages, so a Seattle household's tax picture stays the same and the housing gap does the talking.
The drive: I-5, OR 58, US 97, CA 139 and US 395
This is one of the longer Pacific Northwest routes into Reno. The truck runs I-5 south for about 285 miles through Washington and Oregon, turns east on OR 58 for about 85 miles over the Cascades, follows US 97 for about 82 miles, and then CA 139 for about 98 miles across Modoc County. US 395 finishes the trip into the Reno area. The total is about 705 miles.
The first leg is freeway, so the drive feels like an interstate trip until the Cascade crossing. After OR 58 the highways narrow to two lanes, towns thin out, and fuel and rest stops matter more. Check WSDOT for the Puget Sound end, Oregon TripCheck for OR 58 and US 97, and Caltrans QuickMap for CA 139 and US 395.
At 500 miles a day this is two days behind the wheel, which means an overnight stop on the road. That is an ordinary part of the haul, not a delay, and it is why your written estimate sets the delivery window rather than the map.
A Seattle household also avoids the Sierra summits. The route runs down the east side of the range on US 395, so the Donner Pass chain controls that affect California moves are not part of the trip.

Seattle and Reno side by side
Seattle averages about 36.5 inches of precipitation a year, against about 7.4 at the Reno airport. The January average high is 48.6 F in Seattle and 47.7 F in Reno, almost the same. July highs are 77.3 F in Seattle and 93.9 F in Reno, with Reno nights cooler.
The table above uses Census figures for the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area: median household income of $115,177, median gross rent of $2,000 and a median home value of $717,500. Reno-Sparks has a median household income of $87,485, median gross rent of $1,592 and a median home value of $502,300, so a Seattle household that sells a home often sees a very different price on the Reno side.
How the move works with O'Brien's
You book the move with O'Brien's, the Bekins Van Lines agent in Sparks, and we coordinate it from your Seattle home through the Bekins network. When the shipment reaches Northern Nevada, we handle delivery, unpacking and, if your new place is not ready, storage in our 30,000 square foot Sparks warehouse (vault storage from $40 per month). Long-distance moves are priced by weight, and the estimate is itemized and in writing. Call 775-359-6683 for a phone ballpark, or send an online request.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.
