Moving from Ventura to Reno

Ventura sits on the coast 100 feet above sea level, and the way to Reno runs east on CA 126, then north the full length of I-5 through the Central Valley. It is a Southern California route that uses I-5 for most of its length.

CA 126, I-5 and I-80

The route block shows 40 miles of CA 126 through the Santa Clara River valley, 344 miles of I-5 across the Grapevine and the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, 124 miles of I-80, and 11 miles of I-80 Business at Sacramento. The road distance is 524 miles against 365 in a straight line.

The Grapevine and Donner Summit

The route has two mountain tests. The Grapevine on I-5 north of Los Angeles can have snow or fog closures in winter, and Donner Summit at about 7,200 feet is the named pass on I-80. Check Caltrans QuickMap before moving day for both. Nevada road reports are at NDOT.

Oxnard's January high averages 66 and July high 73, with 13 inches of rain. Reno's July high is 94, January lows reach 26 and snowfall averages 21 inches. The Census counts few moves between the two counties, with margins as large as the estimates, so the data say only that people move both ways.
