Moving From Nevada to Arizona

Arizona is a busy two-way neighbor, with about 6,026 people leaving Nevada for it in 2024 and about 5,504 arriving from it. A move south is a short flight and a long drive, and the timing rules below decide when to start the paperwork.

Arizona's immediate rule

The Arizona Department of Transportation says a vehicle brought from another state must be registered as soon as you become an Arizona resident, and that state law requires a license and registration immediately when certain triggers apply. Residency can start with a job in Arizona, enrolling children at resident tuition or staying seven months or more in a calendar year.

Because there is no day count, line up the Nevada side first: the title, proof of insurance and a lease or purchase paper showing your Arizona address. Plan to visit an MVD office or an authorized third party in your first week.

Taxes: a flat 2.5 percent and a transaction privilege tax

For tax year 2026 the Arizona Department of Revenue gives 2.5 percent as the rate for estimating your tax. Arizona's sales tax is called the transaction privilege tax, and the state portion is 5.6 percent, with counties and cities adding more.

Nevada charges no state income tax on wages, so a paycheck earned in Arizona will lose a small slice to the state. The difference is much smaller than a move to a high-tax state, which makes Arizona a common choice for retirees and remote workers.

Census estimates show about 1,187 people a year leaving Washoe County for Arizona and about 626 coming from Arizona into Washoe County. The Phoenix area draws most of them, and Tucson is the second large destination; both have their own page, Reno to Phoenix and Reno to Tucson.
