Moving to Reno from Arizona
About 5,504 people moved from Arizona to Nevada in the Census 2024 survey year, and about 626 Arizonans a year settle in Washoe County, where Reno and Sparks are. Phoenix sits about 718 road miles from our Sparks warehouse.
Arizona is one of the few states that sets no grace period on licenses and registrations, so the paperwork side of a move to Reno starts the day you become an Arizona leaver, not on arrival. The numbers above are Census and state-agency figures; this page explains what they mean for packing, closing out your Arizona accounts and settling into the Truckee Meadows.

What Arizona asks of its residents, and what that means when you leave
Arizona's Motor Vehicle Division says a new resident must register a vehicle as soon as residency begins, and its driver license manual says a license is required immediately once any residency trigger applies. Those words describe people arriving in Arizona. For someone leaving, the practical point is the reverse: keep your Arizona plates and license valid until the day you hand your keys to the Nevada DMV, and do not let a registration lapse in the middle of a move.
Arizona residency can also be triggered by working in the state or by enrolling children at resident tuition. If you are ending a job or a lease in Arizona, write down the date your Arizona residency actually ended. A tax professional can tell you whether a part-year return applies; the Arizona Department of Revenue publishes the rules.
Taxes: a small Arizona tax against none in Nevada
Arizona taxes personal income at a flat 2.5 percent for tax year 2026, and its state transaction privilege tax, the Arizona version of sales tax, is 5.6 percent before county and city additions. Nevada has no state personal income tax. A flat 2.5 percent is low by national standards, so for many Arizona households the change in take-home pay is smaller than it would be for someone leaving California or Oregon.
Housing is the bigger line. The Census puts Arizona's median home value at 394,500 dollars and its median gross rent at 1,543 dollars a month. Our Reno cost of living page and housing market page set the Reno figures beside them, so you can compare like for like before you sign a lease or a contract.
Desert to high desert: what changes for your belongings
Reno sits at about 4,500 feet and has a real winter. Furniture that has lived in Phoenix or Tucson heat for years meets snow, dry cold air and a heating season. Wood furniture and instruments can shift with the humidity change, so let pianos and wood pieces settle in the house before you judge them. Our altitude guide and weather guide cover what newcomers notice first.
Winter tires or chains, an ice scraper and warm clothes belong in your car, not on the truck; see winter driving around Reno and Tahoe before your first January.

How an Arizona to Reno move works with O'Brien's
You book the move with O'Brien's in Sparks. We coordinate it from your Arizona home through the Bekins Van Lines network, and then we handle delivery, unpacking and storage here in Sparks. Long-distance moves are priced by weight, and the free in-home estimate comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.
Phoenix is the largest Arizona origin and has its own page, Phoenix to Reno; Tucson is covered at Tucson to Reno. If your new Nevada home is not ready when the shipment arrives, our storage between homes keeps your goods in the Sparks warehouse until you are.
Nevada in one short block
Nevada's statutes give new residents 30 days to register a vehicle and 30 days to get a Nevada license, and the state collects no personal income tax. Each step has its own page in our moving to Reno guide, including the driver's license and vehicle registration pages.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

The Census American Community Survey counted about 5,504 movers from Arizona to Nevada for 2024, and about 6,026 going the other way, so the two flows are close to even. The margin of error on each is large, which is why we describe them as about.
Does Arizona have a state income tax?
Yes. Arizona uses a flat rate, 2.5 percent for tax year 2026 according to the Arizona Department of Revenue. Nevada has no state personal income tax.
How far is Phoenix from your Sparks warehouse?
About 718 road miles. Long-distance household moves are priced by weight, so the mileage is only one input; the written estimate carries the delivery window.
Do I need to register my car in Nevada right away?
Nevada gives new residents 30 days. Keep your Arizona registration current until then so you are never without a valid one.
I was so impressed with the way the crew handled and packed each piece of furniture for short term storage. They were polite and professional. I would highly recommend them to anyone planning a move.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.
