Orange County is 414 miles from Reno in a straight line, but the road is 494. It is the longest of the Southern California routes that use US 395 and it runs inland, away from the coast, from the first mile.
CA 60, I-15, then US 395
Starting from the Santa Ana area the route uses about 16 miles of CA 60, 33 miles of I-15 and 383 miles of US 395, with 34 miles of I-580 at the end. In plain terms, the truck heads out through Riverside County, picks up the Cajon area and Victorville on I-15, and then takes US 395 north through the high desert and the Owens Valley.
US 395 is the whole story of this move: 383 miles of it, passing Independence, Bishop, Mammoth, Bridgeport and Topaz before it reaches Carson Valley. It is a rural highway with little shelter and few large towns, which is why trucks fuel and rest at planned points.
Conway Summit, about 8,140 feet
The one pass is Conway Summit, the highest point of US 395 in California. Winter storms can bring chain controls or closures. Check Caltrans QuickMap for California, then NDOT for the Nevada end. Spring and fall are the calmer seasons for this route.
