Moving from Provo and Orem to Reno

Census counts put the flow from Utah County to Washoe County at about 122 people a year (2016-2020), against about 101 moving the other way. Utah as a whole sent about 3,440 people to Nevada in 2024. Provo has 114,766 people in the city.

The drive: I-15 and I-80

The routing is built from two interstates. I-15 carries the truck about 42 miles north through the Wasatch Front to the Salt Lake City area, and I-80 then runs about 514 miles west across the Bonneville Salt Flats, past Wendover and through Elko, Winnemucca, Lovelock and Fernley to Sparks. The total is about 560 miles.

The Wasatch Front stretch is the busiest part of the drive, with commuter traffic around Provo, Orem and Salt Lake City. A truck leaving at a quiet hour avoids it. After that the road is open interstate across the Great Basin, with fuel and services at regular intervals. Utah DOT and Nevada DOT both post winter conditions.

At 500 miles a day the map says two days behind the wheel, with a free-flow time of 9 h 18 min. Loading time, weight stops and the Sparks schedule all sit inside the trip, so your written estimate sets the delivery window.

The routing data lists no mountain pass on this route. The Sierra summits that shape moves from California are not part of it.

The table above uses Census figures for the Provo-Orem-Lehi metro area, with median household income of $100,704, median gross rent of $1,534, a median home value of $535,500 and 31.4 percent of households renting. Reno-Sparks has a median household income of $87,485, median gross rent of $1,592 and a median home value of $502,300.

About 31 percent of Provo-Orem households rent, a little below the Reno-Sparks share of about 38 percent. Utah taxes income at a flat rate and Nevada does not tax wages.
