Data (read 2026-10-19): OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, free-flow drive from 2277 Glendale Ave, Sparks; U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates; NOAA NCEI U.S. Climate Normals 1991-2020; U.S. Census Bureau, State-to-State Migration Flows (ACS 1-year 2024); U.S. Census Bureau, ACS county-to-county migration flows 2016-2020.

Census counts put the flow from Multnomah, Washington, Yamhill and Clark counties to Washoe County at about 280 people a year (2016-2020), while about 439 a year moved the other way. In 2024 about 2,358 people moved from Oregon to Nevada. A Portland household is leaving a mild, wet climate for a high desert with four seasons and far less rain.

The drive: I-5, OR 58, US 97, CA 139 and US 395

The route starts on I-5, which carries the truck about 113 miles south through the Willamette Valley. It then turns east on OR 58 for about 85 miles over the Cascades, joins US 97 for about 82 miles through the high country east of the range, and drops into California on CA 139 for about 98 miles through Modoc County. US 395 finishes the trip down the east side of the Sierra into the Reno area. The total is about 533 miles.

After the first freeway miles, most of the route is two-lane highway. Services are spread out, the grades on OR 58 are long, and winter conditions on the Cascade crossing can change in an hour. Check Oregon TripCheck for OR 58 and US 97, and Caltrans QuickMap for CA 139 and US 395, before any winter departure.

With two days at 500 miles a day, the haul usually includes an overnight stop for the driver. That is part of the trip, not a delay, and it is one reason your written estimate sets the delivery window instead of the driving math. Our mountain passes page lists the winter-closure points on routes into Reno.

The final approach matters for a Portland household because it arrives from the north, down the east side of the Sierra, and never touches Donner Summit. The mountain driving is done in Oregon, and the Nevada end is a descent into the Truckee Meadows on US 395 and I-580.

What the climate difference means

Portland averages about 36.9 inches of precipitation and 4.2 inches of snow a year. Reno averages about 7.4 inches of precipitation and 20.9 inches of snow. The January average high is 47.5 F in Portland and 47.7 F in Reno, nearly identical, but Reno nights are colder and the air is far drier. July highs are 81.9 F in Portland and 93.9 F in Reno.

The table above uses Census figures for the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro area, with median gross rent of $1,724 and a median home value of $559,400. Reno-Sparks has a median gross rent of $1,592 and a median home value of $502,300. Oregon taxes wages and Nevada does not, and many households weigh that along with housing cost.

What customers say about O'Brien's

Francie H.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.
