Moving from Medford to Reno
Medford to Reno is about 305 miles, a 6 h 6 min free-flow drive, and the shortest of the Oregon routes into Northern Nevada. Medford has 86,315 people in the city and about 223,000 in the Rogue Valley metro area, at an elevation of 1,434 feet.
Census counts put the flow from Jackson County to Washoe County at about 9 people a year (2016-2020), with about 29 a year moving the other way. Medford is the closest large Oregon origin to Reno, and the route crosses into California within the first hour.
The drive: I-5, CA 89, CA 44 and US 395
The route starts on I-5, which carries the truck about 87 miles south from Medford into Northern California. It then follows CA 89 for about 78 miles and CA 44 for about 46 miles across the volcanic country of the Cascade range, and joins US 395 for about 64 miles down the east side of the Sierra toward Reno. The total is about 305 miles.
The mountain driving is on CA 89 and CA 44, where elevation and winter weather matter. Caltrans QuickMap shows chain controls and closures on both highways, and winter trips should check it before departure. The rest of the route is an interstate and a US highway.
At 500 miles a day, this is one day behind the wheel, with several hours to spare on the free-flow time of 6 h 6 min. A loaded truck has loading and a scheduled arrival at the other end, so your written estimate sets the delivery window rather than the map.
The last miles on US 395 pass through Susanville country before the highway drops toward the Reno area. Most of Medford's route is lower than the Cascade crossings used from Portland, Salem and Eugene.

Medford and Reno side by side
Medford averages about 18.4 inches of precipitation and 3.4 inches of snow a year. Reno averages 7.4 inches of precipitation and 20.9 inches of snow. The January average high is 48.2 F in Medford and 47.7 F in Reno, and July highs are 91.6 F and 93.9 F, so the summers are alike.
The table above uses Census figures for the Medford metro area, with median gross rent of $1,358, a median home value of $430,200 and 34.1 percent of households renting. Reno-Sparks has a median gross rent of $1,592 and a median home value of $502,300.

Before the truck arrives
Long-distance moves are priced by weight, and the estimate is itemized and in writing. Our Oregon to Reno guide covers license and registration, and the long-distance checklist covers mail, utilities and records.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
