Bend to Reno is about 389 miles, an 8 h 12 min free-flow drive, and 138 of those miles are on US 97 through the high country of central and southern Oregon. Bend sits at 3,637 feet with 103,390 residents in the city and about 258,000 in the metro area.
Census counts put the flow from Deschutes County to Washoe County at about 31 people a year (2016-2020), while about 73 a year moved the other way. Bend and Reno are both high-desert cities, so the climate change is smaller here than on any other Oregon route, and that shapes what the move feels like.
The drive: US 97, CA 139 and US 395
The route uses US 97 for about 138 miles south from Bend, then CA 139 for about 98 miles through Modoc County in northeastern California, and US 395 for about 64 miles. The last 17 miles run on I-580 into the Reno area. The total is about 389 miles, one of the shorter routes from Oregon.
Nothing on the route is a freeway for long. US 97 and CA 139 are two-lane highways with long distances between towns, and US 395 follows the high plateau east of the Sierra. Fuel stops, weather and daylight drive the schedule more than the speed limit does, so winter trips should start with Oregon TripCheck and Caltrans QuickMap.
At 500 miles a day the map says one day behind the wheel. A loaded truck also has loading time, a weight stop and a scheduled arrival in Sparks, so your written estimate sets the delivery window. The mountain passes page explains which approaches to Reno close seasonally; this route does not climb a Sierra summit.

Bend and Reno side by side
Bend averages about 8.5 inches of precipitation a year, against about 7.4 at the Reno airport. The January average high is 44.2 F in Bend and 47.7 F in Reno, and July highs are 87.5 F and 93.9 F. Bend nights in July average a cool 48.5 F, and Reno's 60.4 F is warmer.
The table above uses Census figures for the Bend metro area, with median gross rent of $1,697, a median home value of $602,600 and 29.4 percent of households renting. Reno-Sparks is at $1,592 rent and $502,300, so a Bend household often finds housing costs lower in Washoe County. Oregon taxes wages and Nevada does not.

How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

My family moved exclusively with Bekins when I was young and O'Brien's made it a pleasure to return to this fine local company. I would be pleased to have any members of O'Brien's as friends and highly recommend O'Brien's to anyone needing the services they provide!

Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.
